Compressed Work Schedules

The following information is provided for informational purposes as staff submit for compressed work schedules:

Compressed work schedules are available to staff at USP McCreary. A CWS is approved for a POSITION - not a staff member.  If you come into a position (transfer in, get a new position at the institution, etc.) any CWS you had in the previous position does not follow you.  Any CWS already approved for the position you take is not automatic - you must request the compressed schedule.

A Compressed Work Schedule (CWS) is typically comprised of either one of the following:
  1. A 4-10 schedule: a schedule comprised of 4 days working 10 hours per day each week.  This schedule provides an additional day off each week.
  2. A 5-4-9 schedule: a schedule comprised of 8 days working 9 hours per day and and 1 day working 8 hours per day each 2 weeks. This schedule provides an additional day off every two weeks.
CWS days off are negotiated as part of the CWS.

CWS requests are submitted through your supervisor and routed through the AW responsible for your department and the Warden.

All CWS submissions and changes MUST be negotiated through your Local 614 Executive Board.

Once negotiations are completed by the Local and the CWS is approved by Management, HRM then submits any approved CWS to Labor Law for their review.  When the schedule returns from Labor Law with no issues, your CWS may begin.

This process can take several weeks (longer depending on negotiations) for a NEW CWS.  It takes less time for a position already approved a CWS.
Tips for your compressed schedule submission:

  • Discuss you CWS request with a Local 614 Executive Board Member.  They can help you avaoid pitfalls in the process and help you ensure your CWS is fair and equitable compared to others at USP McCreary.
  • CWS Schedules submitted will be based on seniority (days off, etc. will be determined by seniority).  If a staff member comes into your department  senior to others in the department, schedules/days off will change based on seniority  starting on the next bidding quarter.
  • Determine if a CWS already exists for your position.
  • Each person within a department can work a different CWS (not everyone in the same department has to have the same CWS)
  • NOT ALL STAFF in a department have to participate in a CWS.
